Dimensional control in petrochemicals: why accuracy decides everything

In a refinery, a measurement error costs more than just time and money. We explain why industrial survey work is fundamentally different from standard land surveying.

In construction, a wall can be half a centimetre out of plumb. In a petrochemical installation, a flange connection cannot be a single millimetre out of position. The difference is not just in the tolerances, but in the consequences of an error: downtime, leaks, safety incidents. Industrial survey work is therefore a separate discipline with its own requirements.

Working under pressure

Shutdowns in the petrochemical industry last days, sometimes weeks. Every day of downtime costs a refinery a significant amount of money. The surveyor is brought in on a tight schedule: survey work completed before the engineers install the next component. That requires experience working under pressure, knowledge of shutdown procedures and equipment that can be deployed quickly on site.

Access and safety

Many industrial sites require additional safety training, a pass application and knowledge of the applicable procedures. We are used to working in VCA environments and follow the safety procedures of the client. Filing our own work permit, performing an LMRA, wearing safety equipment: that is standard for our team.

What does good dimensional control deliver?

  • Factory manufactured pipe sections that fit first time, without costly rework on site
  • Shorter installation time because engineers work with reliable coordinates
  • Fewer revisions and re-measurements, fewer disruptions to the schedule
  • Reports that match the requirements of the client or engineering office

Dutch Survey BV has experience at sites of Air Products, Strabag Züblin and other parties active in the Botlek and Maasvlakte. We know the environment, the requirements and the way of working.
